Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek Via Jiri

Everest Base Camp Trek Via Jiri is a conventional trekking route starting at Jiri, in Dolakha district which is also popularly called as “Switzerland of Nepal’ for its lush landscape and varied tropical geography. Unlike, the classic Everest Base Camp Trek that begins from direct flight to Lukla, the trek to Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri starts with a day long drive from Kathmandu towards Jiri. The first successful Everest expedition by the British team in 1953 which was led by John Hunt including Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary took the route via Jiri on their way to Everest.

The trail via Jiri is obviously longer than what it would be via flight to Lukla as it would take at least 6 days to reach Lukla via small settlements along the lower section of Solukhumbu district. You will cross through numerous villages of: Shivalaya, Bhandar, Sete, Junbesi, Nunthala, Bupsa until you reach Lukla from where you’ll take the classic route towards Everest Base Camp.

One of the popular treks in the Himalayas is the Jiri route to the Everest Base Camp, which is considered a classic. Although more demanding and lengthier than the conventional route through Lukla, it offers a genuine cultural encounter and breathtaking views. To suffice for the additional days added in the trek, there are numerous opportunity for you to immerse in the typical Sherpa culture of the people residing in the lower stretch of Khumbu region.

The journey commences from Jiri, a diminutive settlement located in the Solu Khumbu area of Nepal, and traverses through various Sherpa villages that are steeped in tradition, such as Shivalaya and Bupsa. During the expedition, you will come across gorgeous sceneries, isolated valleys, and breathtaking glimpses of the towering Himalayan summits.

To begin the journey from Jiri to Shivalaya, it typically takes about six hours and includes traversing challenging uphill paths, crossing bodies of water, and navigating through wooded areas. Shivalaya, a compact town with only a handful of accommodations and stores, serves as a central location for trekking in the vicinity. It is an essential stopover for hikers exploring the area.

The next section of the trek follows from Shivalaya to Sete for which one must ascend a steep hillside that leads to the ridge overlooking Bhandar. From there, a breathtaking view of the valley below can be observed. Continuing through verdant forests and pastures, the trek passes through three villages – Kinja, Dokharpa, and Chimbu – before arriving at Sete. The small village is nestled in a picturesque valley, encircled by emerald hills, and renowned for its magnificent views of the nearby mountains.

Starting from Sete, a tiny village positioned at an altitude of 2575m, the trek follows a trail that passes through Junbesi, Nunthala, and Surkhe. The initial section of the journey necessitates a steep ascent up the Lamjura pass, which is located at an elevation of 3530m. Afterward, the trek descends to Junbesi, a traditional Sherpa village recognized for its ancient monasteries and stunning landscapes. From Junbesi, the journey proceeds to Nunthala, crossing through rich forests and picturesque landscapes.

Nunthala is a small village situated on the banks of the Dudh Koshi river and is well-known for its captivating waterfalls and breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. The final part of the trip involves trekking to Surkhe and then Lukla. Lukla is crossroad for trekkers embarking from Jiri and those taking direct flights from Kathmandu. Form Lukla we, followingly cross through the classic Everest Base Camp Trek route via: Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Gorakshep till your reach your final stop at Everest Base Camp. We take a hike to Kalapatthar (5545m) to gaze at the magnificent panorama of Everest Vista.
