The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the most challenging and thrilling treks in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek takes you through three high mountain passes i.e., Kongma La (5535m), Cho La (5368m), and Renjo- La (5338m), each having the stunning views of the Himalayas. This is a rugged trek that traverses through some of the highest mountain passes in the world with astounding Everest Vista surrounding you. The remote and implausible landscape along the trail makes it even more worthwhile for trekkers. The trek is a fantastic option for trekkers who are looking for an adventure that takes them off the beaten path and into some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the Himalayas.
Starting with the scenic flight to Lukla, the trek follows the classic Everest Base Camp route for the first few days, passing through the Sherpa villages of Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche. As you probe into the mountains above the elevation of 3500 metres (beyond Namche Bazaar for this trek), you will have to tackle Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) for the oncoming stretch.
Somewhere in between Lungden and Gokyo lies Renjo La Pass (54,35m), the first among the three major passes we traverse. From Renjo La Pass, you will gaze at the picturesque vista of Everest massifs right above the deep green Gokyo Lake below. Furthermore, Renjo La Pass bestows trekkers with bird’s eye view of several mountains: Mt.Everest, Mt.Lhotse , Mt.Makalu, Mt.Cho Oyu, and Mt.Ama Dablam. You will stay at Gokyo village for the day and acclimatize the following day for your next traverse Cho-La Pass.
Gokyo is a bowled shape valley with the village sitting right below the glacial moraine overlooking the deep crystal clear Gokyo Lake. The village has its own ambiance with typical Sherpa houses made up of wood. You may choose to hike to Gokyo-Ri (4750m) the following day to gaze at the amazing Everest Vista.
Next, we will continue our trip from Gokyo to Thagnak (4,700m), crossing Ngozumpa Huge mass of ice on the way. From the trails, in addition to awesome Himalayan lands, you will also get a chance to see yak, or if you are lucky yaks grazing on them. Your trail then heads towards Dzongla (4855m) traversing through another highest pass of the trek Cho-La Pass (5420m).
Cho-La Pass is the second major pass in this journey. This pass connects the Gokyo area and Everest area serving as the Everest Viewpoint.
After having crossed Cho La Pass, you enter the Everest Area, and we will be heading towards Everest Base Camp, but we have to stop in two places – Lobuche (4,910m) and Gorak Shep (5,185m). As we move forward from Dzongla to Lobuche, you will get to see the memorial statues of travelers who gave in to the harsh conditions in this area.
From Lobuche it’s an 8-hour journey to reach Gorakshep. At Gorakshep, we leave our belongings and continue our journey towards Everest Base Camp. After spending time on EBC, we will lower/move downward to Gorak Shep and spend the night there. The following morning, we will wake up at Gorak Shep and journey to Kala Patthar (5,555m), from where we can catch the heavenly sight of dawn breaking on Mt. Everest. We will soak in the amazing scenery and get back to Gorak Shep and lower/move downward to Lobuche to spend the night.
The next day, we will start our journey from Lobuche to Chhukung (4,730m), with the Kongma La Pass (5,535m) in between. This is the final of the three major passes, and it is the most difficult one due to its high altitude. However, it is important to keep in mind that the more challenging the journey, the greater the rewards will be.
The trek ends with a descent back to Lukla, passing through the Sherpa villages of Tengboche and Namche Bazaar along the way. Throughout the trek, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the unique Sherpa culture and visit monasteries and traditional villages along the trail.
While the Everest Three Passes Trek is a challenging adventure, it’s also one of the most rewarding treks in the Himalayas. If you’re looking for an adventure that takes you off the beaten path and into some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the Himalayas, the Everest Three Passes Trek is an excellent choice.
