Dhaulagiri Circuit Trekking is a popular form of trekking activity for it begins from the popular point , Beni, which acts as midpoint for the famous Upper Mustang Trek. From Beni the trail heads westward through small quaint Gurung settlements along the river basin of Myagdi Khola. Populated densely by Gurungs and Magars, the trail is filled with unique culture, tradition and walk of life of the inhabitants of the region.
The houses along the way are made up of rocks that are flat cut paved in the porch and yard of Gurung and Magar houses. The long facade of the house usually faces South, towards the sun. Gurung houses are rectangular in plan and typically 1.5 storeys high.
For the first few days we traverse through broadly encompassed sub-tropical dense forest, river streams, terraced farm and sparsely populated villages. As we pass Sallaghari (2820m) and head for Italian Base Camp, the terrain changes its outlook completely. Arid and Alpine like landscape appears before us there onwards. In the days to follow, you will ascend towards another high-altitude traverse to reach Dhaulagiri Base Camp via numerous glacial moraines and rock boulders.
Dhaulagiri Base Camp is a small flatland that sits on the foot of the gigantic Dhaulagiri Mountain. It is the initial stop for climbers summiting Mt. Dhaulagiri. We acclimatize at Dhaulagiri Base Camp for the biggest ascent of the trek to the highest passes of the trek begins from here.
From Dhaulagiri Base Camp the trail ascends towards French Pass crossing glacial moraines and rugged rock boulder paths finally descending towards the famous Hidden Valley. The French Pass is one of the highest mountains passes in the Dhaulagiri region, and crossing it requires excellent physical fitness and trekking experience. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Mountain ranges.
From the Hidden valley the trail ascends steeply through narrow rocky ridges headed to Dhampus Pass from where the trail descends towards Yak Kharka. The trail now descends through desert like arid topography until finally reaching Marpha, your end point of the trek. Marpha is a charming village located at an altitude of 2,670 meters. It is known for its apple orchards, traditional architecture, and friendly locals. The village is also famous for its production of apple brandy and other local products. From Marpha you will be driven to Pokhara.
The accommodation during Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is in a teahouse and camping tent. A teahouse is wooden built structure in the mountains for accommodation facilities. Similar to the mountain lodges in the European Alps, teahouses provide with private room and meals for travellers in trekking regions. These teahouses provide a limited food and beverage options.
The trail stopovers until Italian Base Camp have teahouses available, however, the trail from there on is remote and requires camp to be set.
